About this postcard
A road curves down through Cedar Pass, with a guardrail on the bend and the eroded ridges and pinnacles of the South Dakota Badlands rising around it. Beyond the pass, the view opens onto a broad plain under a pale sky. Cedar Pass cuts through soft layered rock that wind and water have carved into sharp cones, walls, and flat-topped buttes. The area was proclaimed a national monument by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938, and the grass-covered plains below the formations have long supported grazing.
