Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA, circa 1937

About this postcard

An elevated view of the Golden Gate Bridge, both suspension towers and main cables in place, spanning the strait between the Marin headlands and the San Francisco shore. The city skyline and hills rise beyond, and the bridge approach near Fort Point shows at the right. The printed caption gives the main span as 4,200 feet and the cost as $35,000,000. When the bridge opened in May 1937 it was the longest suspension span in the world, a record it held until 1964, and its two-tower silhouette became a symbol of the city almost at once.
