The Golden Gate Bridge spans the strait from a shoreline in the foreground, its two red towers and suspension cables crossing blue water toward hills on the far side. Dark vegetation frames the near shore. Completed in 1937, the bridge connected San Francisco with Marin County; its 4,200-foot main span was then the longest suspension span in the world, and its 746-foot towers and six-lane deck with pedestrian walks made it a modern landmark of the bay.
