About this postcard

The Golden Temple of Jehol stands as a full-size replica of a Chinese Lama temple, with tiered golden-yellow roofs, red columns, and green-and-gold bracket work above a low stone platform. A few small figures appear on the steps. The original Golden Pavilion at Jehol, now Chengde, served as a seat of worship for the Manchu emperors. North Chinese architects and artisans copied it for Chicago's 1933 Century of Progress, and Vincent Bendix gave the replica to the exposition. It arrived in 28,000 pieces and was assembled on the fairgrounds, as the caption says, "put together like the parts of some huge Chinese puzzle." The fair's foreign villages and pavilions made the replica one of the exposition's distinctive sights.
