About this postcard
Elevated view of the Lake Washington Ship Canal locks — the Government Locks at Ballard — with a vessel in the lock chamber, the spillway dam and bridges beyond, and the city and hills in the distance. The card's own caption calls them the "Canal Locks Second to Panama," a common boast for the lock system completed in 1917 that linked Lake Washington and Lake Union to Puget Sound. The photographer Frank H. Nowell was a longtime official photographer of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and of Seattle scenes.
