About this postcard
Aerial view over the Government Locks in Seattle, with the lock chambers cutting through the water and a large ship accompanied by smaller vessels nearby. Buildings and grounds of the lock complex surround the channels. The Government Locks, also known as the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, were completed in 1917 and are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They connect Puget Sound with the Lake Washington Ship Canal, letting vessels move between tidewater and Seattle's inland lakes. By the time this view was published, the passage served both commercial traffic and recreational boats in the Ballard neighborhood.
