About this postcard
The picture shows the Governor's Palace at Williamsburg, Virginia: a long red-brick Georgian mansion with a slate hip roof, dormers, tall brick chimneys and a white cupola topped by a weathervane, fronted by a forecourt with a brick wall, gate and clipped shrubs. The original palace, begun about 1706 and finished around 1720, served as the official residence of Virginia's royal governors and later of two post-colonial governors before it burned in 1781. The building seen here is the reconstruction carried out in the 1930s as part of the restoration of Colonial Williamsburg.
