About this postcard

The photograph shows the Governor's Reception Room in the Utah State Capitol, Salt Lake City, with a coffered and painted ceiling, large crystal chandeliers, paneled and mirrored walls, heavy draperies, and tufted settees arranged around a long central table on a patterned carpet. The room was part of the new capitol built in the 1910s and dedicated in 1916. Its furnishings cost $65,000; the 22-by-48-foot rug weighed 1,350 pounds and was made in Dundee, Scotland; the building itself cost $2,750,528.54. The room's scale and the Scottish-made rug suggest the state's effort to furnish the capitol in a formal, monumental style.
