Grain elevator and harbor with steamboats, Buffalo, New York, circa 1905

About this postcard

The picture shows Buffalo's harbor dominated by a massive grain elevator with a cupola and smokestacks, surrounded by the masts of sailing vessels and steam-powered lake boats at the wharves; the card's own caption names it "The Harbor of Buffalo, N.Y." Buffalo was the western terminus of the Erie Canal and one of the great grain ports of the Great Lakes, and its waterfront was lined with huge steam-powered elevators that transferred grain between canal boats, lake freighters and railroad cars. A decorative emblem at upper right, with an eagle, a classical figure and an American flag, reads "Greetings from Picturesque America."
