About this postcard

Three visitors in 1930s dress stand at a rustic stone-and-timber railing on the terrace of Grand Canyon Lodge, looking out over the red canyon walls and the distant rim. The printed caption places the view on the balcony of the Union Pacific lodge and calls it one of the favorite locations for sightseers. Grand Canyon Lodge opened in the late 1920s as the Union Pacific's showpiece on the North Rim, the stop on the railroad's circuit of Utah and Arizona park scenery. The sender's pencil note on the front reads "Breath Taking" and gives rough estimates of the canyon's spread, 8 miles and 40 miles across, a visitor's attempt to put the scale into words.
