About this postcard
The view takes in the eroded buttes and terraced walls of the Grand Canyon, with deep shadowed gorges below and a pale sky above. The canyon is described as a river channel about 7,000 feet deep, thirteen miles wide, and hundreds of miles long, one of the scenic wonders of the world and a place visited by thousands of tourists each year. The Colorado River cut the gorge through layered rock, and by 1936 the canyon was a national park and a long-established stop on the Santa Fe Railway route to the South Rim, where the El Tovar hotel stood. A brief note home, mailed that year, is a small trace of the tourist traffic the canyon drew.
