About this postcard
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone seen from a rim viewpoint, its walls banded in yellow, rust and pink, with the white plume of the Great Falls visible far down the gorge. Pines crowd the near edge and the river threads the canyon floor. The printed caption calls the canyon one of the great sights of the park and describes cliffs revealing more than a thousand feet of iridescent color. The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone drop about 308 feet, close to twice the height of Niagara, over rhyolite lava that hot fluids altered into the clays and ochres staining the walls. Artist Point and Lookout Point on the south rim gave visitors the standard prospect that park photographers and postcard publishers used from the early 1900s onward.
