Grand Central Terminal, New York, circa 1920

About this postcard

Elevated view of the great arched facade and colonnade of Grand Central Terminal, with its sculptural clock group by Mercury crowning the corner, while automobiles, a streetcar and pedestrians fill the street below. The present Beaux-Arts terminal, designed by Warren & Wetmore with Whitney Warren, opened in 1913 on 42nd Street and replaced the earlier Grand Central Depot; its Park Avenue viaduct and monumental south facade made it one of New York's best-known landmarks. The motor traffic and open streetcar in the foreground date the view to the early automobile era.
