About this postcard

The domed mausoleum of Ulysses S. Grant stands on its terraced plaza above the Hudson River, with the wooded Palisades rising across the water and a river landing with a steamer below. Grant's Tomb, the General Grant National Memorial, was designed by John Hemenway Duncan and completed in 1897 in Riverside Park, Morningside Heights, Manhattan. The City of New York erected it in recognition of Grant's Civil War service, and the tomb drew thousands of visitors daily. Grant and his wife Julia Dent Grant lie side by side inside. The Palisades on the opposite bank are the diabase cliffs that line the New Jersey shore of the Hudson.
