About this postcard
A tall white marble obelisk rises behind an iron fence and clipped hedges, with bare winter trees and a lawn in the foreground; the printed caption names it as the grave of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mary Ball Washington, mother of George Washington, died in Fredericksburg in 1789, and the present obelisk monument over her grave was dedicated in 1894 after an earlier, vandalized memorial from the 1830s was abandoned. The grave site is a long-standing stop on Fredericksburg's historic tours.
