The view shows Gray Hall and the Refectory on the early campus of Sweet Briar College, a women's liberal arts college founded in 1901 in Amherst County, Virginia. The buildings and cupola belong to the school's first generation of structures, when Sweet Briar was establishing itself as one of Virginia's women's colleges.
The refectory served as the campus dining hall, and the two buildings stand together in a setting that was still largely rural in the college's early decades.
