Great Falls and Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, circa 1940

About this postcard

A tall waterfall drops over a lip of rock into a deep, V-shaped canyon, its walls banded in yellow, orange, and rust-red, with dark pines clinging to the rims and slopes. This is the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, 308 feet high, the view that has drawn visitors to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone since the park's first decades. The printed caption keeps the older name, Great Falls, for the same drop. The canyon's colors come from iron-rich, hydrothermally altered rhyolite, and the river below runs north toward the Yellowstone's confluence in the park's northern range.
