About this postcard
The view looks up the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone at the Great Falls, a 308-foot drop of the Yellowstone River between steep rhyolite walls colored in ochre, pink, and gray. A road and an automobile appear on the rim at upper right. The falls are the lower of the canyon's two cataracts, and the canyon's color comes from hydrothermally altered rhyolite. The printed text calls the canyon "a cameo of every shade of colors, from crimson to black, deep orange to gray, pink to pearl and back again." Yellowstone was established as a national park in 1872, and the canyon was among its early landmarks.
