About this postcard
The view looks across the Temple Square grounds to the great domed Mormon Tabernacle, whose long colonnade of pillars and shallow elliptical roof fill the middle distance, with the Gothic spires of the Salt Lake Temple at the left and the Sea Gull Monument on its stone pedestal in the foreground. The Tabernacle, completed in 1867, was long famed for its huge unsupported wooden roof and its pipe organ, and served as the meeting hall of the Latter-day Saints. The Sea Gull Monument, erected in 1913, commemorates the gulls said to have saved the pioneers' 1848 crops by devouring a cricket plague. The Wasatch foothills rise behind the buildings.
