The Salt Lake Tabernacle, a long oval hall with a shallow domed roof and rows of arched openings, is seen across a lawn and flower beds. Shade trees partly screen the building, and an American flag flies from a pole in front. Completed in the late 1860s on Temple Square, the Tabernacle was built to hold large Latter-day Saint gatherings under a self-supporting wooden lattice dome. It housed a celebrated pipe organ and served as the church's main meeting hall until the Conference Center opened in 2000.
