About this postcard
Looking east along Greene Street from Center Street in Augusta, Georgia: a wide avenue under a heavy canopy of oaks, with horse-drawn carriages and buggies sharing the roadway with pedestrians, several women carrying parasols. An obelisk monument closes the view at the far end of the street, and houses with porches and picket fences line both sides. Greene Street was among Augusta's grandest addresses in the early 1900s, in a city that had grown prosperous as a cotton market on the Savannah River. The scene still belongs to the horse era, though Augusta already had electric streetcar lines by then. The sender added only a signature, "from Papa," the sort of brief greeting that made the postcard a quick and inexpensive way to keep in touch.
