About this postcard
A tree-shaded residential street in Augusta, Georgia, seen from Center Street looking east: horse-drawn carriages and buggies share the wide roadway with pedestrians, several women carrying parasols, and an obelisk monument stands at the far end of the street between rows of mature oaks. Houses with porches and picket fences line both sides beneath the heavy canopy. Augusta, founded in 1736 by James Oglethorpe, is one of Georgia's oldest cities and grew as a cotton-market town on the Savannah River; its Greene Street was long noted for its dense street trees and handsome antebellum and Victorian homes.
