Greetings from Kansas large-letter map, 1959

About this postcard

"Greetings from Kansas" fills the state outline with a pictorial map of Kansas products and landmarks. Hogs, cattle, wheat, corn, and sugar beets stand for the farm economy, while oil derricks, a flour sack, airplanes, and a printing press mark other industries. Topeka is starred as the capital, and Dodge City, Wichita, Abilene, and the Eisenhower Memorial are labeled among the towns. The meadowlark and sunflower, Kansas's state bird and flower, appear at the lower corners, and the map notes the geographic center of the U.S. and the site of the last Indian raid on Kansas soil in 1878. Large-letter souvenir cards were a common way for mid-century travelers to send a state's highlights home. A traveler's note mentions crossing Kansas, passing sugar beet country, and staying in a cabin that night; it calls the state beautiful but windy.
