Greetings from West Virginia, large-letter postcard, circa 1907

About this postcard

The letters of "Greetings from West Virginia" are filled with small views of the state: a domed capitol, mountain ridges, rivers, and industrial buildings. At upper right a line drawing shows a farm; at lower right, a coal bucket and lumps of coal. The mix presents West Virginia as a place of government, Appalachian scenery, rural life, and coal country. Coal was central to the state's economy in the early 1900s, and the bucket and lumps make that association explicit.
