Greetings from Wisconsin large-letter postcard, 1939

Card type
Linen

About this postcard

A large-letter postcard in which the word WISCONSIN is filled with scenes from the state: the dome of the Wisconsin State Capitol at Madison, a monument statue, a lake with a motorboat and a fisherman, a rock formation, woodland, and a red barn with dairy cows in the foreground, with hollyhocks rising behind the letters. The imagery emphasizes Wisconsin's identity as a dairy state and a place of lakes and state parks. On the back, Edith Baker writes to a correspondent about trading large-letter cards and state symbols, promising to look for more Wisconsin city views. Large-letter cards of this style were a specialty of the Chicago firm Curt Teich & Co., whose C.T. Art-Colortone linen-finish stock was widely used for American roadside postcards in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Dear Pal, Your Harper Ferry view was swell. Many thanks! I do like churches & bridges best, but save all kinds but comics. I am trying to get Governor's Home, Flower, Tree, Bird, Song or Verse, and LL from Capitol City for each state. Have some duplicates but need many to complete my book. Will try to get LL from more Wis. cities for you. Sincerely, P.P.S.C. 1212. Edith Baker
