About this postcard

A small landscape vignette shows a blossoming branch over a grassy bank, a stream or pond, and a low building with two evergreens in the distance. Below it, the printed word GREETINGS heads a six-line verse wishing the recipient lasting happiness and joy shared with friends. The card carries a personal Christmas-time message from an aunt to her niece. Auntie thanks her for a present, says she will remember her once the knitting for her soldier boy is finished, and mentions a photo of him, a Christmas box, and a peck of chestnuts sent his way. She hopes the family has a merry Christmas and happy New Year and notes that the ground is still almost bare, with no snow yet. The knitting and parcel point to home-front routines in 1917, when families sent comforts and food to soldiers serving in the First World War.
