About this postcard
A view of Griffith Observatory in Griffith Park, Los Angeles, showing its three copper domes, the central entrance portico, and the tall Astronomers Monument obelisk in the foreground, with lawns and flower beds along the walkways. The caption calls it the "Planetarium," the popular name for the building, which opened in 1935 as a gift of mining magnate Griffith J. Jenkins Griffith and was designed by architects John C. Austin and Frederick M. Ashley. The Astronomers Monument, a Works Progress Administration project sculpted by six artists, honors Hipparchus, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Herschel.
