The grounds of the Miller Orphan Asylum spread across a broad lawn, with curving gravel walks edged by ribbons of red bedding plants. Ornamental shrubs, banana plants, and large shade trees frame the scene, and brick buildings stand in the background.
The asylum was a private Lynchburg charity founded in the 1870s with a bequest from local merchant Samuel Miller; it was later known as the Miller Home for Girls. Its landscaped grounds gave the institution a calm, orderly setting.
