A broad garden of curving paths and flower beds fills the foreground, with palms framing the long, multi-gabled Soldiers' Home building. Utility poles and a small outbuilding stand at right, and low hills rise beyond. The home was the Pacific Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, established in the late 1880s near Santa Monica. Its landscaped grounds gave veterans a parklike setting and made the campus a local landmark.
