About this postcard

A halftone view of the Ohio State University gymnasium and armory, a crenellated brick building with a tall central tower, arched entrance, and a long range of windows, standing behind a low wall and lawn. The castle-like front suited its double duty: physical training for students and drill for the cadet corps. James's short note home to Danboro, Pennsylvania, was posted from Columbus in March 1918, in the last year of the First World War, when college campuses were also putting men through military instruction. He writes that he is "still here and working hard" and expects to be out by the middle of April, the kind of brief status line common to wartime correspondence.
