About this postcard

The image shows Hampton mansion, a Georgian country house with a central cupola and columned portico, its wings spread across a broad lawn with bare trees in the foreground. Built between 1783 and 1790 for the Ridgely family, Hampton was among the grandest houses in Maryland and remained a family seat for generations. The caption places it under the Society for the Preservation of Maryland Antiquities, the private group that operated the estate as a museum in the mid-20th century before the National Park Service took over.
