Hance's Trail, Grand Canyon of Arizona, 1901

About this postcard

A mule party picks its way along a narrow trail cut into a steep slope of the Grand Canyon, a huge shadowed rock wall rising at right and the canyon depths fading into haze beyond. The caption names the route Hance's Trail, blazed in the 1880s by prospector John Hance, who afterward guided visitors down it and became one of the South Rim's best-known characters. Mule trains like this one were the standard way for early tourists to reach the canyon floor. At the time the canyon was a forest reserve and national monument; it was designated a national park in 1919.
