About this postcard
A rocky mule trail cut into a steep slope of the Grand Canyon, with riders on mules picking their way along the path while a huge shadowed rock wall rises at right and canyon depths fade into haze beyond. The caption names it Hance's Trail, the route blazed in the 1880s by prospector and canyon guide John Hance, one of the earliest tourist paths into the canyon and long traveled by mule parties from the South Rim. The card is a Detroit Photographic Co. copyright of 1901, from the era when the Grand Canyon was still a forest reserve and national monument rather than a national park (designated 1919).
