About this postcard
The Hancock-Clarke House in Lexington, Massachusetts, shown as a two-story clapboard dwelling with dark shutters, a large central chimney, and a smaller rear ell, seen across a lawn behind a low stone-post fence. The printed caption reads "Hancock Clark House"; the family name is properly Clarke. Built in 1737 as the parsonage for the Rev. Jonas Clarke, the house was where John Hancock and Samuel Adams were staying when British troops marched on Lexington on April 19, 1775. By the time this card was mailed on Christmas Day 1905 it was already a landmark shown to visitors, and it is now a house museum operated by the Lexington Historical Society.
