About this postcard
The view looks down the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River, where a single-track railroad runs along a narrow ledge between towering red granite walls and the water; the Hanging Bridge spans the river in the middle distance. The Denver & Rio Grande's line through the gorge, completed in the 1870s after a celebrated right-of-way struggle with the Santa Fe, crossed the river here on a deck-girder bridge pinned to the canyon walls. The scene became one of Colorado's most photographed railroad attractions in the early twentieth century.
