The view looks down the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas River, where a single-track railroad runs along a narrow ledge between towering red granite walls and the water. The Hanging Bridge spans the river in the middle distance, a steel deck-girder span carrying the Denver & Rio Grande line through the canyon. That route was completed in the late 1870s after a bitter right-of-way fight with the Santa Fe, and the gorge became one of Colorado's most photographed railroad sights in the early 1900s.
