The view looks down the narrow granite walls of the Royal Gorge to the Hanging Bridge, a steel span pinned between the canyon cliffs high above the Arkansas River. The bridge carried the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad's narrow-gauge line through the gorge, and its deck was partly suspended from the rock walls because no room existed for piers on the canyon floor. The Royal Gorge route, completed in the 1870s after the famous railroad war with the Santa Fe, remained one of Colorado's best-known scenic rail passages.
