About this postcard

Large trees shade the lawn around Hanover Court House, a brick colonial courthouse with arched openings, and the tall obelisk honoring Hanover's Confederate soldiers. The courthouse was erected in 1735 and, according to the card, served as headquarters for Lord Cornwallis and Lt. Col. Tarleton; fighting swept the grounds on May 27, 1862, during the Battle of Hanover Court House. The monument honors the Confederate soldiers and the women who supported them, 1861-65. The card also places the births of Patrick Henry and Henry Clay nearby and notes that Machumps, brother-in-law of Powhatan, lived in the area in 1610.
