A birthday greeting centered on a wooden trellis covered with pink chrysanthemum-like flowers, with “Happy Birthday” printed above a four-line verse. The verse promises joy whatever the weather and ends with the line “Because this world is holding You.” The card was sent in 1910, when birthday postcards were a common way to pass along a short, sentimental message. The penciled note is in German, with only fragments such as “Karte” and “Geburtstag” legible, suggesting a German-speaking sender.
Aged and toned paper with edge wear, rounded corners, and scattered stains/foxing; no white border.
Postmark: BALCONY R.P.O. SEP 16 1910. Divided-back card with 2-cent Washington adhesive stamp; message written sideways in pencil along the left edge; light toning and edge wear.
