About this postcard
The card sets the opening lines of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” in red and green lettering beside a gold star and sprigs of white-berried mistletoe, with “A Joyful Christmas” at the lower right. The words are Charles Wesley’s, written in 1739; the familiar melody was later adapted from a Mendelssohn chorus, and by the early 1900s the hymn was a familiar part of Christmas celebrations. The sender, H. G. J. Pond, mailed the card in 1911 with wishes for a merry Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. It was addressed to Mrs. Martin Nichols in Walton, N.Y., a village in Delaware County.
