About this postcard
A curving mountain road climbs through granite outcrops and dense pine forest in the Black Hills, with the rounded summit of Harney Peak on the horizon. A rustic roadside sign identifies the view and gives the elevation as 7,242 feet. Harney Peak is the highest point in South Dakota and a landmark on the road to Mount Rushmore; the highway carried tourists into the Black Hills as the memorial was being carved in the 1930s and 1940s. The peak, long known to the Lakota as Hinhan Kaga, was renamed Black Elk Peak in 2016.
