A harpy eagle perches on a thick branch, its dark plumage set off by a pale, bare head and heavy scaled legs, the bird shown in profile facing right. The printed caption calls it the largest and fiercest of South American birds of prey and notes that it feeds on sloths and monkeys. Harpy eagles hunt the canopy of Amazonian rainforest, so a living specimen at the U.S. National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., was an exotic attraction for visitors in the early 1900s.
