About this postcard
A small stone hatchery building with a steep hipped roof and an arched window stands among dense trees at Backbone State Park. A stone wall and open gate lead to the building. The caption names it simply as the hatchery, likely the park's fish hatchery, where young fish were raised for stocking Iowa waters. Backbone State Park, in Delaware County, became Iowa's first state park after the state acquired the land around the Backbone in 1919. Its narrow limestone ridge above the Maquoketa River gave the park its name and drew early visitors to the bluffs and wooded valley.
