About this postcard

Haymarket Square is packed with horse-drawn wagons, carts, and vendors, with a monument base in the foreground and brick commercial blocks, awnings, and a tall elevator-like building behind. The square was the site of the 1886 Haymarket Riot, a labor demonstration that ended with a bomb thrown and a policeman killed; the trial and executions that followed became a rallying point for labor and radical groups. By the early 1900s the square was a busy wholesale produce and hay market on Chicago's near west side.
