Haymarket Square, scene of the Haymarket Riot, Chicago, circa 1906

Card type

About this postcard

A dense jam of horse-drawn wagons, carts and vendors fills Haymarket Square in Chicago, with a monument base in the foreground and brick commercial blocks, awnings and a tall elevator-like structure behind. The card names the square as the scene of the Haymarket Riot, the 1886 labor demonstration in which a bomb was thrown and a policeman killed, followed by a controversial trial and executions. By the time this view was printed the square was best known as a busy wholesale produce and hay market on the city's near west side.
