Rolling farmland near Lynchburg, with dozens of conical hay or grain shocks scattered across a mown field, split-rail and stone fences, and wooded hills fading into the distance. The printed caption calls it "Green Fields of Old Virginia," a scenic view of the Piedmont farm country around Lynchburg in the early 1900s. Mixed farming of corn, wheat, and hay shaped this landscape, and shocks like these were a familiar late-summer sight in the region's farm economy.
