About this postcard

A shallow brook runs through dense woodland, with ferns and grasses along its banks and a dirt path climbing the slope at right; the card names the spot as the head of Whittier Brook in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the birthplace of poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Whittier, born in Haverhill in 1807, drew on the rural Essex County landscape of his youth for much of his verse, and local landmarks such as this brook were promoted to visitors as literary shrines. The scene is rendered in the soft, tinted manner typical of early twentieth-century color lithography.
