The view looks down into the eroded badlands basin of Hell's Half Acre, west of Casper, Wyoming, where soft sandstone and clay have weathered into a forest of pinnacles, ridges and gullies in ochre, pink and pale grey. The site, a natural depression roughly 40 miles west of Casper along the old Yellowstone Highway, was long a popular roadside stop; a cafe and service station were later built into the rim before highway reconstruction in the mid-20th century largely obliterated the formation.
