Henry Hartfield in auto, State Fair, Huron, SD, circa 1907

About this postcard

Henry Hartfield sits at the wheel of an early open touring car, wearing a dark suit, bow tie, and straw boater. The car has tufted leather seats, a bulb horn, and large brass headlamps, and a hand-lettered sign behind him reads "To Huron S.D. State Fair." Hartfield, writing from Wessington Springs, identifies the picture as himself on the way to the State fair. The fair at Huron was a major annual gathering for farm families in the region, and a private automobile trip there in the early 1900s would still have been a notable outing.

Dear Cousin Havent heard from you for a long time how are you all anyway? I am all O.K. This is a picture of me going to the State fair. Do you have any water melons this year. It is awful cold here to day. May be I'll get to see you this winter. Answer soon. Your Cousin Henry Hartfield Wessington Springs S.D.
