Hereford cattle on the western range, Greybull, WY, 1947

About this postcard

A herd of white-faced, red-bodied Hereford cattle stands in dry golden grass, with a lake or river and sunlit mountains under billowing clouds behind them. The printed title, "Flowing Gold of the Western Range," presents the cattle as the wealth of the open range. Herefords, developed in Herefordshire, England, and brought to the American West in the late 19th century, became a dominant beef breed on the plains. The image reproduces an oil painting by cowboy artist and poet L. H. 'Dude' Larsen, and the card was written from Greybull, Wyoming, ranch country in the Bighorn Basin.
